Books

Most of my publishing work was in t he much faster-paced magazine industry, but on occasions I was given the chance to work on a book. Below are some of the book projects whose design I oversaw.

The History of Atlantic Records

The team assembled to work on this history of Atlantic Records was an eccentric and quirky one – my favorite kind. It was originally funded by one of the most fun and nutty characters from the UK. An amazing character who would be gone all day in the archives of the Atlantic Records offices and then at night post things all over the walls of our office loft. Another terrific character was Marlon Richards — Keith’s Kid— who worked as my design/photo associate and I taught him as much as I could. We spent a lot of time working together in the art department. He’s a lovely guy.

Working there was so enjoyable, I would arrive early to see what our eccentric financier from the UK posted on the walls the night before. I would comb through old backstage photos and actual mechanicals from album covers I had long known. This was truly one of the most intriguing and unique projects (and teams) I have had the pleasure of working with.

Time Out NY Eating And Drinking Guide

Trying to figure out a cover image to represent the entire NYC food scene was certainly a challenge. Pitching concepts and then finally settling on the grapes as the center of the whole food scene in NYC was a challenge. My team had a hard time agreeing on things – except for those grapes. From stuffed grape leaves to wine to raisins in desserts; grapes were a part of everything. Even the leftover stem made sense for the “Maps” section opener. There was something about grapes in their many forms that hit every section of the guide with some humorous concept. So grapes was the decision.

Though sadly it never saw the light of day because of rights issues,
working on her new magazine’s first cookbook was a fun project.
